Over the past two decades, there has been a significant transformation in doctoral education. Structural reforms, increased professionalisation, and the establishment of doctoral schools have improved conditions for early-career researchers. Nevertheless, the quality of supervision remains a decisive factor in terms of success, completion, and well-being. Meanwhile, traditional one-to-one supervision is increasingly being replaced by collaborative, team-based models that incorporate multiple perspectives and embed doctoral candidates more deeply within research environments.
Another shift is emerging in the form of the rapid rise of artificial intelligence as a new actor in the doctoral process. Always available and becoming ever more capable, AI tools are already influencing research practices, writing processes and intellectual exchange. This growing presence raises important questions about the roles, responsibilities, authority, integrity and trust involved in supervision.
The PRIDE Masterclass 2026 will bring together vice-rectors, doctoral school leaders, professional staff and supervisors to explore these developments. Through keynote contributions from international experts, interactive formats and peer exchange, participants will examine evolving models of supervision, the expanding role of AI in doctoral processes and institutional strategies for fostering high-quality, inclusive and internationally attractive doctoral programmes.
The Masterclass will analyse how team-based supervision reshapes responsibilities, relationships and support structures, while critically reflecting on the current and future role of AI in research and supervision. Participants will gain practical tools and concrete examples, as well as space for dialogue, to help them translate insights into their own institutional contexts.
