Taking place during Mental Health Awareness Week 2019, the International Conference on the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Postgraduate Researchers, in association with Nature Research and organised in partnership with the University of Sussex and University of Portsmouth, brings together the leading researchers and practitioners to present the latest research projects and to highlight the good practice in the provision of appropriate and timely support to this unique cohort.

Keynote and breakout sessions will give delegates ample opportunities to reflect on the latest research being conducted within our universities, and discover effective practices being implemented to support research students.

The conference will also provide delegates space to connect with peers. To share and discuss ideas and practices across a range of empirical, theoretical and applied approaches to postgraduate researcher mental health and wellbeing.

We hope participants will return to their institutions with new evidence-based insights into the mental health and wellbeing of postgraduate researchers, and innovative ideas to effectively embed these insights into practice, whether in the design and delivery of student support services or through the diverse activities of graduate schools and researcher developers.

The clock continues to count down to the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. It is, however, a measure of the uncertainty surrounding Brexit that even at this late stage the final outcome is unknown.
The impact of the 2016 vote to leave is real, however, and already being felt by the research and doctoral education communities. In spite of the UK Government’s assurances around existing funding, and the status of EU workers, fundamental concerns remain regarding:

  •     Access to continued levels of research funding
  •     Immigration and recruitment
  •     Continental collaboration and regulations
  •     Sharing of research and technological advances.

Senior research managers at institutions in the UK and across Europe are facing similar challenges, asking themselves the same questions:

  •     How to continue to fund pan-European research projects including UK partners
  •     How to maintain collaborative links with European partners
  •     How to protect an institution’s global reputation for excellence in research and doctoral education in a more constrained collaborative environment
  •     How to continue to attract the best students and researchers

Bringing some clarity to a picture of uncertainty

This joint EUA-UKCGE seminar will aim to bring some clarity to the picture of uncertainty.

Embracing the EUA’s positive position on worst-case scenario planning - “even a no-deal Brexit should not prevent universities on our continent from cooperating in the years to come” - the seminar will present three questions for delegates to consider:

  •     What are the existing strengths of doctoral education in the UK and other parts of Europe?
  •     How can we maintain and develop pan-European co-operation in the light of a Brexit?
  •     What key messages are there for UK and EU policymakers to ensure that doctoral education in Europe continues to benefit from European cooperation and mobility?

The outcome of discussions will be captured in a short report for our members to disseminate within their institutions and beyond.

In addition to this, the event will provide opportunities for networking with both UK and European colleagues and insight into the recent survey of doctoral education undertaken by the EUA.
