About the Conference

25 years ago postgraduate education was regarded as a “cottage industry” on the “fringes of higher education”. Now it’s a multi-billion pound success story, fuelled by the growth in funding, research opportunities and student populations. Looking to the future, if the Government is to meet its Industrial Strategy R&D target by 2027, it’s essential this meteoric growth, in both PGR and PGT numbers, continues.

But it won’t happen by itself.

It requires renewed efforts to demonstrate the social and economic values of postgraduate education. And, more critically, it requires investment in postgraduate research cultures – fostering cultures of openness, inclusivity, curiosity and scepticism, rigor, tolerance and personal autonomy.

There are, of course, substantive challenges. Thriving during postgraduate study, at either PGT and PGR level, entails risk. Extracting knowledge from others’ work; decoding complexity; constructing new knowledge; and coping with unpredictability. Meanwhile pressures to publish, open access, a focus on individual success over team work, insufficient focus on diversity and the full breadth of talent has created a hyper-competitive environment.

The 2019 Annual Conference will explore ways we can enhance existing research cultures, to create ‘positive group cultures’ for the benefit of all postgraduate researchers.
